Learning
The Museum is placing a great deal of importance to building strong links with local schools and other educational establishments. Particular attention is being given to developing Learning Trunks and teaching aids, to cover a range of subjects which include:
- The Romans- early crafts, their clothing & coins used etc
- The Fire Service- Including the history of the Town's own Fire Engines from 1736
- Law & Order and courtroom procedures with special events for local schools
The above initiatives have involved the preparation of educational aids to assist teachers
and provide pupils with worksheets and information. They are for application in the learning
environment and during visits to the Museum. The educational aids are relevant from the
pre-school to higher education levels and comprise of:
- Teaching packs
- Worksheets
- Supporting DVD's
- Collections of photographs and images.

Learning Trunk's Hire:
As described above Museum has created three types of
Learning Trunks which cover the following subjects:

The Fire Service
Law and Order
To ensure that the use of these resources is flexible and they
can fulfill the individual requirements of a class of pupils, there
are a variety of ways to hire and use these trunks: : Size (HxWxD) 32x50x30
¶ Hire of a Trunk only for half a term.
Hire of a Trunk with the provision of a Museum Educator for a day
Hire of a Trunk with the provision of a Museum Educator for half a day.
Hire of the Law and Order Trunk for a day plus a follow-up visit to the Guildhall
for an action packed adventure tailored to the School’s requirements.

This bright, welcoming area is the venue for the Museum's popular story telling sessions and also provides a learning experience. See News & Events Page for details of the
2009 programme.
Children are encouraged to engage with the exhibits in various ways. They learn about the collections held in
the Museum and to help there are "please do touch" signs, They get involved in handling items from collections; view interactive and multimedia displays and experience a variety of fun collections.

in a Museum environment.

The Romans Learning Trunk includes examples of crafts, typical clothing, coins and housewares.

The Museum has created a "Fire Service Learning Trunk" which is using the theme as a way for helping children to learn and use basic skills.
